Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting!

Just a weird mix on the page today. A pose I was sketching surrounded by two guys fighting. Actually the I drew the girl and then put it away for a bit. Then when I had a few moments, I thought I would work on some fight poses for a commission I am doing. Like I said, weird mix.

Hey Gene, since I think those thumbnails are for my piece, I figured I'd let you know that I got three new "KK vs." pieces this past weekend at NOLA Comic-Con. They're up here if you want to look. Thanks again!

Right you are! I just looked at your latest and the KK vs. KK vs KK is just insane! Makes me think I should just pack it up. ;)

Hey, the little fighters must be fighting over the girl! I think there is a story here!

NEVER pack it up, man. I'm sure your piece will be awesome. BTW, I just this weekend got Tales of the Cherokee 1-2. Very good stuff! Any plans on doing more one day?

Gary - Could be! :)

Travis - I'm just kidding, I take it as a challenge. :) I'm glad you enjoyed Tales of the Cherokee. I was a real labor of love. Someday I will do some more. I have the stories, not the time. In the meantime I would love to do the original stories in color and offer them in the Apple iPad App Store. Anyone out there a developer???

hi gene,
i love your sketch ideas for poses. i was curious do you have any advice on good references for action poses like you did in your sketchbook? i've only seen 1 other similar to what you did in a how to draw marvel characters from what i've searched, i haven't had much finding similar outlines. i think they are pretty helpful especially for ideas but i just wish there were more. thanks if you can help.

Charlie - If I am not drawing something I am real familiar with, I tend to look to my library of books, if I have the type reference needed or I do a search on the internet. For these little figures, I did a couple of searches for images using "Martial Arts" and "Ultimate Fighting" as a staring point. Using just the thumbnails that came up I started doing little figures. Sometimes they would be direct ideas from the image, sometimes the image would inspire something else. There is no way any one image would be perfect because everything in the photos is static and "grounded" in reality. That's why my figures are just gestures. Something to build on later. I could have easily looked at comic books featuring martial artists but I would rather look at real life (or photos of real life) to use as my spring board. The rest is years of my drawing the human figure and putting it all together. I hope that answers your question.
