Zatanna

Zatanna © DC Entertainment

I was never a big fan of this costume (the original fishnet version being my introduction to the character probably has something to do with that) but it does have a special place in my life:

The very first comic book professional I met was Gerry Conway. Gerry did a signing at Passport Comics in North Hollywood. I brought some comics for him to sign and was surprised he had a stapled script of the issue where this costume debuted. And the comic hadn’t come out yet!!!! It was months away. I bought two scripts from him for $10. I had never read a comic script before and it was fascinating. Then the comic came out and I was surprised how I had seen all the art in my minds eye months before.

Below is a picture of the scripts. I came across them during a move and tweeted the photos to Gerry. He seemed to have gotten a kick out of seeing them again.

Merry Christmas

Wonder Woman © DC Comics

I didn't have time to create a new piece for this Christmas post so I pulled this image from my work archives. This is a recreation I did in Adobe Illustrator for DC Licensing. Merry Christmas to all of you that celebrate the holiday. For those that don't, peace and good will to you and yours.

Big Barda - (Ame-Comi)

Big Barda © DC Comics

This is the first time I have drawn this "ame-comi" version of Barda. Based on one of the statues. Very cool design to play with.

Ralph Dibny - The Elongated Man

Elongated Man © DC Comics

Just a warm up sketch done in Manga Studio EX5. I have some brushes created by Frenden that I really like. They mimic the way I would ink with a brush. More warm ups to come. I am also doing these in Manga Studio to become better at navigating around the program. Right now for Perils on Planet X, I am doing about 75% of my pencils digital and then inking traditionally. I plan to do all my  future work at 100% digital pencils and mix up the inks between digital and traditional.

Conventionless Convention Sketches - The Finale

Thanks to everyone who got a sketch. When I announced I would be taking requests, it was a completely different world for me. And while I try not to let life get in the way of work, it still does. Thank you all for your patience and your ongoing interest in my work. Hope you enjoy these.

J'onn J'onzz - Conventionless Convention Sketch

J'onn Jonzz © DC Comics

This is J'onn how he looked when he was featured in the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 30th century. Seems Martians live a long time. And it all started because Dave Cockrum drew J'onn as a background guest at the wedding of Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel in Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #200. :)

Conventionless Convention Sketch Update

Just wanted to update everyone real quick that I will not have all the sketches done by November 17th as planned. Pretty embarrassed by that actually. I have had a number of things that have taken my time away from the sketches and Perils on Planet X. I am digging into the list pretty strong this week as you can see and I do plan to be done with the last 12 by Thanksgiving.

Thank you for your patience and as always thank you for your interest in my work.

Terra-Man - Conventionless Convention Sketch

Terra-Man © DC Comics

Here is a blast from the past. Is Terra-Man even around in the new DCU? When he was first introduced he seemed like he could be a pretty cool villain. Kind of a Clint Eastwood western character. But as time went on he was almost a Yosemite Sam type character in that he was played more for humor. Too bad. Still, how can you not like the image of a man from the old west, using weapons of alien worlds, riding a winged horse through space?

I also recorded the making of this one. Though the video stopped for some reason near the end. And I didn't bother recording the ink drying to the point where I could add the star field. Still, I hope it is interesting to you.

Mano (Fatal Five) - Conventionless Convention Sketch

Mano © DC Comics

For those that are not familiar with this character, he is a member of the Fatal Five, foes of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He is so bad he once used the destructive power of his hand to destroy his home planet! Some people need to build a moon-sized Death Star and staff it with hundreds of thousands to do that. :)

Another first time character for me. I remember seeing the movie HEAVY METAL in the theaters when it was released so that made doing this piece extra fun. (Too bad I didn't save this piece for the next post. The post number would have coincided with the year the movie was released)

RETURN OF THE CONVENTIONLESS CONVENTION SKETCHES

October 2013 - Return of the CONVENTIONLESS CONVENTION SKETCHES!

CONVENTIONLESS CONVENTION SKETCHES (CCS)! It's just like a regular con sketch that I would do for you at a convention, except no crowds, no convention hall food, no hotel bill, and no travel. And the price is the same as a show sketch. You only have to pay extra for shipping. Still cheaper than going to a show. If you have been waiting to get a black and white, inked single character sketch from me, now is the time to get it. If not for yourself, maybe you want a gift for that special someone? Holidays are coming up and the gift of original artwork shows how much you care. :)

Here are the details...

CCS DEAL:

$50.00 for a single character, inked on 11" x 17" bristol board. I will not be doing multiple characters on a single board. Shipping is $12.00. No matter how many sketches you get! Buy 1: Shipping is $15.00! Buy 20, shipping is $15.00! (Just an FYI, my normal studio price starts at $75.00 plus shipping!). This shipping cost is US only, sorry. If you are outside the US, contact me for shipping costs.

I am going to take a total of 30 commissions. Assuming I get 30 requests, of course. Any background elements will be at my discretion. I will begin working on the sketches starting October 12th and all sketches will be done by November 17th. Finished art will be mailed each Thursday. Payment is PayPal only. (No e-checks, please).

If you are interested, send me an email to gene_gonzales(at)mac(dot)com. Please use "Conventionless Convention Sketch" in the subject line and let me know what you would like. That address and subject line are very important. It helps me sort the requests from other emails. That email address is also my PayPal account, but check with me before sending money, please. I do reserve the right to turn down requests that I don't feel comfortable drawing. If you have any questions, please email me.

Please tell your friends, family, and local politicians. Tweet it on Twitter, Tumble it on Tumblr, Pin it on Pinterest, Face it on Facebook...Okay, that one didn't sound right, but you get the idea. Please get the word out any way you can. Thanks! :)

Quick Update: If you are on my list and haven't sent your payment yet, please note that the shipping cost for US is $15.00.

Posted above are examples of sketches done at HeroesCon 2013.
(If you haven't been to this great show, make a point to do so in 2014!)

Mary Marvel

Mary Marvel © DC Comics

Things have been a bit hectic around here. I am hip deep in work and also Chapter 3 of Perils On Planet X. But then along comes Mary. She doesn't care how busy I am. She just wants me to draw her. :)

I based this on the version of Mary as done by Bob Oksner. And she is for sale. Just click on the "Art for Sale" tab at the top.

Supergirl

Supergirl © DC Comics

I think I will be trying to post here on Tuesdays from now on. With the 2-Pt Perspective blog posts on Thursday, it makes it a bit harder to do two posts in a day. Hard to believe I used to do this everyday and twice on Thursdays. Whew.

Here is another head shot, this time of Supergirl. I did this on 8.5" x 11" Strathmore Drawing Paper using ink and Copic Markers. As usual these days, I will be posting it on eBay tonight. Updated link to follow later. :)

I think I got them all here. To see what I did at the show, follow me on Twitter (@genegonzales) and look at my past tweets. Thanks again to everyone who got a sketch in advance and at the show. And for just coming by and saying "HI". It was a lot of fun and I can't wait until next year!
