Mano (Fatal Five) - Conventionless Convention Sketch

Mano © DC Comics

For those that are not familiar with this character, he is a member of the Fatal Five, foes of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He is so bad he once used the destructive power of his hand to destroy his home planet! Some people need to build a moon-sized Death Star and staff it with hundreds of thousands to do that. :)

THE PERSUADER - The Fatal Five

The Persuader © DC Comics

This is the final of the Fatal Five portraits for Travis. Because of my love for the Legion of Super-Heroes these pieces have been fun to do. Thanks again Travis, for the commissions and your patience.

For those of you who are counting, you may notice that there have been 31 Conventionless Convention Sketches posted. Well, there are still four more to go. Yeah, a couple came in that I just couldn't turn down. I will be posting them over the next four or five days. Also, tomorrow I will have a couple of announcements to make so I hope everyone will be here for that. :)

EMERALD EMPRESS - The Fatal Five

Emerald Empress © DC Comics

This is the fourth of five of Fatal Five portraits for Travis. The Emerald Empress is probably the most sadistic of the Five in my opinion. She not only will kill to get what she wants, but she feels the need to subjugate those that oppose her. And she does take great joy in both. Thanks again Travis! And thanks for your patience!

There was a gap of a few weeks between the Fatal Five portraits because sometimes getting the paper color I need is difficult. In local stores, customers put their hands all over the paper and/or bend them, leaving creases or folds. I have gone through 20 sheets of one color and still not find one that isn't damaged. If I order on line, the same thing can happen in the handling and shipping of the paper. The paper is of a lesser weight than say bristol board and is more susceptible to creases so there isn't much I can do except reorder or wait for a store to have some new undamaged stock. A lot of times I buy a full sheet but can only get one 11" x 17" out of it or even one 9" x 12". That is only around 25% to 50% of the sheet. I use the rest for testing colors. Canson does have some colors mounted on illustration boards and those are more durable and great to use. I use those when I am going to paint on the paper, but the color selection is limited.

VALIDUS - Fatal Five

Validus © DC Entertainment

This is the third of five for Travis. There are more than a few origins for Validus, too many to go into here. All you really need to know is that he is the toughest of the Fatal Five. Besides his size and his strength, his brain can give off a deadly charge of electricity. Enough to knock out Legionnaires like Superboy and Mon-El. And the fact that Tharok can control Validus to do his will, makes Validus that much more deadly.

THAROK - Fatal Five

Tharok © DC Entertainment

Continuing with the series of Fatal Five portraits for Travis, we have the leader of this super-baddies, Tharok. Tharok was a small time crook who attempted to steal a nuclear device. The police shot at him but struck the bomb atomizing his left side. A hastily made robotic half was made to save his life. Of course these things never go right and Thorak survived with a deep hatred for lawmen and an equal passion for evil. Thorak also has a great deal of control over the gigantic Validus.

MANO - The Fatal Five

Mano © DC Entertainment

This is the first of five head shot Canson pieces I will be doing of the Legion of Super-Heroes villains, The Fatal Five. I am doing these for Travis. This first one is Mano. Mano has to wear a helmet that supplies him with the same toxic atmosphere from his home world. This would be the world he destroyed with the "anti-matter" touch of his right hand. Nice guy.

My take is a mix of old and new versions of Mano. The costume is classic but the way his head is depicted is inspired by George Perez' version. In the classic version, Mano's head was just a silhouette, George made it much creepier.

Thanks Travis!
