Black Knight & Supergirl

Here is another inked commission I finished this morning. Marvel Comics Black Knight. This is ink on 11" x 17" Strathmore Bristol Board.
And below is a quick piece I did for fun using Prismacolor Cool Grey markers in a 9" x 12" Canson Drawing Pad.

You're getting better and better with the grayscales.

Thanks Lan. The right paper is crucial too.

I really like the power of the Black Knight piece. One of your best male drawings ever! The Supergirl is a cutie...

Both pieces are great Gene, but you know how partial I am to the early 70's Kara.

Question: When you do a piece for fun like this, do you just doodle around or do you have the pose and facial expression already in mind before you start? Also, do you decide on the character after the fact or have in predetemined? Back in the day when I used to doodle more, I would draw a face and then decide who it looked like before addin the hair and other distinguishing features. haha The mark of an artist that really has no control over the art.

Thanks Craig. I get so many female character requests (not complaining! not complaining!) that this round of commissions of male characters was pretty cool. This was also the first time I have ever drawn the Black Knight.

Thanks Royce. To answer your question, it can go either way. With Kara, I knew I wanted to draw a smiling Supergirl and went about it. The next one in my pad started as just a face but then I realized it was Gwen Stacy. No plan whatsoever. So I doodled until the piece revealed itself.

I really like the Supergirl headshot! A different change of pace in pose relative to the full figure shot (although the Black Knight is a welcomed post).
