Starfire

Just a quick roughed out sketch for inking later. Loooong day, no painting, just time to sketch a bit during lunch. This is my take on Starfire from DCs Titans. Pencil on 11 x 17 bristol board. Good night.

Nice sketch Gene. Which brings up a question or two.

When you take a break from regular work to do a "sketch" (read MORE work..) has the subject been pondered in the back of your mind or is it something more spontaneous? Also, do you stop and look for references or is this all from memory? The more mainstream subjects like Supergirl or Captain America can be easily visualized, but Kory's costume details aren't imprinted on the minds of most folk. Just wondering. :)

Royce - Thanks. To answer your question, most sketches are spontaneous. This is the exception. I had sketched the figure (the pose was in a catalog lying around at the time) but I didn't know what to do with it. The pose was generic enough so it could be anyone. I was thumbing through the DCs Comics Encyclopedia and came across a shot of Kory and there you go. One other thing, I tend to sketch with more of a cartoony style but I try to do comic book realistic from time to time because that seems to be the preferred style out there. So sketches like Kory are to keep those skills tuned up. Thanks for the question. I hope I answered it.
