Process: Dreadbaby - 2. Color Test

At this point, I have scanned the pencil rendered art and made a few copies of it on a single page. Before having a computer, and more importantly a Wacom Tablet, I would photocopy the art and use markers, color pencils or whatever was handy to do color comps. I still have some old comps from covers I have done. Now it's much easier. On these four copies, I am just throwing colors together to see what stands out. Whatever I decide on at this point will not translate directly to the painting though. Digital and traditional medium colors don't come out exactly the same. This is just to get ideas. There are things I like in each one of these. The tough part is narrowing it down. I don't do too many comps because I could easily get bogged down in choices. So these are it. One interesting thing came up though. While I was working on the rendering, the term Love Pirate came to me and I came up with the little flag. I can't recall seeing that before or hearing the name. So I Googled it and sure enough there is a band called Love Pirate. I thought I was being so original. Oh well.

The fun part is next: Painting! To be continued.

I don't know if you are looking for any opinions, but personally, although I like them all for different reasons, I like the left two the best. I guess if I had to choose one of those two I would have to say the blonde. She seems to stand out on the page more. Not just because of her hair, but I like the other color combos you chose for her as well. HUGS Looking great as usual.

I like the one in the lower right corner. Guess this could be a bit difficult for the artist, trying to pick the one that you like and has the most consumer appeal!

Hey, does that band have a trade mark on "Love Pirate"? If not....

Thanks for sharing your knowledge Gene!

Just to show that you can't please all the people all the time, I like the upper right one!

They are all great. I just love redheadish girls in green for some reason. I am enjoying this series very much Gene.

Love the name LOVE PIRATE. Never heard it before, but am not shocked it was taken. Are there any good names left that aren't already in use.

I think my favorite is the bottom left... but the bottom right is right behind.

I'm really enjoying our trip through your process from sketch to finished piece.

Wow! I am blown away by everyone posting. Thanks!

Starlady: You are in good company, my wife likes the bottom left one too. Thanks!

Gary: Thanks for your opinion. I don't know if the band has a trademark on Love Pirate. Might be worth checking into it. Thanks!

Royce: Thanks for your input. Your love of all things red head is well known. :)

Brian: Thanks for your thoughts on these.

Craig: Glad you're enjoying this. I only hope the finished piece lives up to all this. Thanks for commenting. :)

I like the top two actually. The green and the red are great, and they match their skintone perfectly.

I'm not into blue, and teal works better on darker skin.

Nice pirate stockings.:-)
