Fire Lad - Legion of Substitute Heroes / Five Years Later

Fire Lad © DC Comics

In the early days of the Legion lore, you would feel bad for the rejected Legion applicants who banded together secretly to become the Legion of Substitute Heroes. But time and time again they did help the Legion and prove themselves heroes. Then later the Subs were used as comedy relief. They were made fun of and treated without much, if any, respect. Granted some of those stories are pretty funny, but still. Then came the Five Years Later story line. There was no Legion on Earth and The Subs became a resistance force to the Earth-conquering Dominators. A race of aliens that had been after Earth and the United Planets for decades. Or centuries, depending on what rebooted universe you read. It was the first time the Subs were portrayed as, well, bad asses. Fire Lad is one of the original members of the Legion of Substitute Heroes. His ability is fire breath. His first appearance was in Adventure Comics #306, March 1963.
