Black Phoenix

Today we have a creator owned character. This is Black Phoenix. I don't know a lot about her but her creator, Jonathan can probably give us the info in the comments section. She is a visually interesting character though. When I saw the design I knew I had to do something with the hem spinning out as if she is turning. Fun stuff!

Thanks again for the commission Jonathan!

Thanks for this very cool commission, Gene! I'm very glad I got on your list for these 'Conventionless Convention Sketches', as I'm afraid it's going to be a conventionless summer for me this year. ;)

I'm very glad you found Black Phoenix visually appealing, and I really like how the pose you selected combines with her design to create a strong sense of motion. Great stuff, but that's as per usual where your work is concerned!

As for info on Black Phoenix herself, I'll give you the (theoretically) short version: Think Wonder Woman meets Zorro in late 19th/early 20th century China. So instead of being sent to Man's World to help the forces of good battle Nazism, she was sent to the Middle Kingdom to defend China's poor and oppressed from corrupt provincial governors, brigands, greedy Western interlopers, opium merchants, and Japanese supervillains with imperial ambitions.

This is a nice one. I like the backstory too. Excellent work as usual Gene.

I really like the background effect, seems to work well with the character.
