Fun with a (digital) Pencil

Last weeks post about the cover process for the Perils on Planet X cover got me thinking. The process I used to paint years ago involved doing full pencils drawings. Developing the values with the pencil, blocking in color with an airbrush and then defining with color pencils and paint. So for a warmup today I wanted to try and mimic drawing with a pencil digitally.

I had a photo on one screen and was using it as a reference while I drew on my Cintiq. I had to play with the brush/pencil settings a bit before I got to a line quality I liked. Color of the pencil was another factor. Finding that right shade of graphite was tricky. The other interesting thing was not changing the pencil size to cover big areas. Something I could do digitally but certainly couldn't using a real pencil. Over all I think this worked for a quickie.

Digital Penciling - Color

Just a little bit of additional color added to this piece. Not much time for anything else today. The weekend was full of family and work. Going into this week I will be completely slammed until the following Monday. I'm exhausted thinking about it. Whew.

Just trying some digital penciling using the Conte Pencil brush in Photoshop. I like the texture of the line. I put some basic color to this piece that I will try to finish up later.

I have finished the "pencils" digitally. At least as far as I need to take them. Normally I would have done this all on paper, but by doing this digitally I was able to move things around, rotate things, resize, etc, without the extra work of erasing, scanning, redrawing, etc. This is going to be printed out and used to transfer the line art to the final board. I have a couple of other elements I am going to add but those are small and I can do that later. Lisa has approved the pencils so I am ready move to the next step.
