Educational Comic

Artwork © 2011 Gene Gonzales

I'm afraid I have to skip today's Conventionless Convention Sketch. I had a perfect storm of deadlines today and while it wasn't a problem meeting them, something had to give and that was today's sketch. I'm almost done inking it but I'm feeling a bit exhausted. Really not a good time to ink or ink well. So Rachel Summers will have to wait until tomorrow for her debut.

In the meantime I will show you want I did work on. A few months back I showed some pencils for a comic book that will be used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I just finished the first pass colors on the book today and here is a detail of one of the panels.

Back tomorrow with baby Phoenix. :) Have a good evening folks.

Tattoos, comics and cappuccinos (oh my?)

Artwork © 2011 Gene Gonzales

Anyone following my Twitter posts will know what I was up to today. For those who don't, I was parked in a Starbucks across the street from where Deena was getting her tattoo done. So while Deena was being stabbed repeatedly by a needle, I was sipping a grande non-fat triple shot dry cappuccino and working on my comic. Productive time too: Penciled a page and inked half of a page. Oh, and Deena's tat came out absolutely incredible. I will share photos very soon.

Cleopatra In Spaaaace! - Fan Art

Artwork © 2011 Gene Gonzales — Cleopatra In Spaaaace © 2011 Mike Maihack

Okay, today's post is going to be all about another artist who's work I really like. If you are not already a fan of Mike Maihack's art work, you soon will be. I only discovered Mike's work in the last couple of years. We've been guests at the same conventions but I still haven't met him. I did meet his lovely wife at MegaCon last year when she stopped to talk to my table mate Joe Pekar, but I've yet to meet the artist himself. But I am a big fan. Hey, I ordered his comic and some prints from his website. I don't do that with just any artist. :)

Cleopatra In Spaaaace!, (yes, there are four "a"'s in the title) is one of Mike's web comics. He has a few others that are a lot of fun but Cleo is the one that reeled me in first. It's a fun adventure/scifi strip that you need to check out. And when you check out his site, look at his gallery. His color work is outstanding. Something that makes me hate him slightly. Well, him and Joe Pekar really. Both have such great color sense that I just stare at their work wide eyed and drooling. Not a pretty sight.

I have been wanting to do a "fan" piece featuring Mike's characters, Cleopatra and Khensu, the cat for a while and finally got around to it. I even got Mike's approval on it. :)

Make sure you check out Mike's site at http://www.cowshell.com. There you find all kinds of goodies to feast your eyes on. Tell him I sent you. :)

This piece was done in ink on a sheet of 11" x 17" bristol board.

Black Widow

Black Widow © Marvel Entertainment

This is just a little something I did for fun today. I worked on it off and on while getting files ready to go to the printer, on phone calls, and any other chance I got today. I was also going to do some roughs for the next Legion Canson Cutie, but I never got a moment to really think about it and develop some ideas for poses. I will do that first thing tomorrow morning. :)

This was done in ink on an 11" x 17" sheet of bristol board.

Tiki #3 - Turnaround

Artwork © 2010 Gene Gonzales

I believe I have finalized the look of Tiki #3. I have been looking a lot of Tiki designs and find that most do not have much in the way of carvings on the back. Which does make things easier for me. :)

Big Trouble

Artwork & Concept © 2010 Gene Gonzales

Heads up team! Looks like this evil is head and shoulders above anything else you have faced. Work together, keep your heads and you will come out ahead!

Sorry. (I should leave the puns to Royce)

Have a good weekend everyone!

Panel review

artwork © 2010 Gene Gonzales

I didn't get a chance to set up the camera to record work on the Harley commission today, but I do have a panel I did this morning. This is a penciled panel from a story I am doing with J.C. Vaughn for a book that will be published by Moonstone. I am inking, lettering and providing gray tones for the story too.

I will try again tomorrow to record the Harley commission work.

The Creeper!

The Creeper © DC Comics

I still have a few more hours of work to go but I thought I would put this up now. I finished this earlier in the afternoon. It's pretty quick and rough but I had fun with it. A little ink and some Photoshop colors and there you go. The inspiration? I just got The Creeper by Steve Ditko hardcover the DC recently published. :)
